One of the most common questions I get asked is how to set up a blog. Where do I start it so that I have the greatest chance of success? Should I use a free host or get my own?

In this video I go through the basics of how to set up a blog properly and what you need to consider before diving in.

If you have any questions about getting started feel free to leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

I hope this video and the tutorials help to resolve some doubts for new bloggers!

  1. Thank you so much for the plethora of information! I am so new and so lost to the world today! Ha. I feel so old. I have been successful in business and marketing for 20+ years. Now trying to get an at home blog/tutorial/media thing going is scary. I suddenly feel ill equipped. I have a vast array of projects and topics. I don't want to box myself into one niche. That aside I can't even begin with the basics! Your guidance is so helpful! Huge fan!

  6. i'm thinking about starting up my own blog but when i went to the blue host website i realized it was american. would it still be ideal for me to use even tho i am in the uk??

  7. Good point its a waste of time to use a free blog but if you have no money start there to at least get the hang of writing.

  8. I didn't even hear you mention your accent (I watched the video 2x), let alone apologise for it, but I love it! Aussie accents and Aussie slang are awesome, and among my favourites in the world! 🙂

  9. I am an expert in wordpress and I made a series of video tutorials for wordpress users. It definitely is the best wordpress course ever. If you want to find out more. check out my channel. I posted a link to this amazing training.

  10. Hi Susan.

Yeah the white background looks cool. It was something I thought about but decided that it wasn't really my style – I'm a bit more casual and like to keep my stuff consistent with the whole "home office" vibe.

All natural light in that one. The pros recommend a sunny side window. 🙂

  11. Ha ha. Great idea. I'll try to get the cat in a video at some point.
The accent remark wasn't meant to be too serious but you're totally right.

  12. Thanks Kimberly. Yeah it's interesting. I don't really like the idea of having myself out there that much but it seems like a necessary step these days.

  13. Hey Martin. Great questions!

Camera: Canon Rebel T2i. It's supposed to be quite a good low light camera and wasn't too expensive.

Lighting: Still a bit of a beginner here. Natural light.

Sound: RODE cold shoe mic. Not happy with sound. Too much "static".

    Hope that helps!
